Council of State today discusses the economic and social situation in Portugal

The Council of State, the political body for consultation with the President of the Republic, meets this Friday in Cascais to review “the economic and social situation in Portugal”.

After the government’s proposal on the state budget for 2023 as a whole has been approved by Parliament, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza will hear from national advisers on the socio-economic situation in the country in the context of high inflation caused by the war in Ukraine.

This will be the 26th meeting of the Council of State since Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa became President of the Republic in March 2016.

The last meeting of the State Council took place on June 28 with the participation of the special envoy of the President of the United States of America for climate change, John Kerry, as a guest. The theme of the last meeting was climate change and the energy transition in light of the geopolitical reality caused by the war in Ukraine.

The Council of State, headed by Marcelo himself, is composed of persons holding the positions of President of the Assembly of the Republic, Prime Minister, President of the Constitutional Court, Ombudsman, Presidents of Regional Governments and former Presidents of the Republic.

It also consists, in accordance with the Constitution, of five citizens appointed by the Head of State for a term corresponding to their term of office and five citizens elected by the Assembly of the Republic in accordance with the principle of proportional representation for a term corresponding to the duration of the legislature.
