Ten areas are under yellow warning due to cold weather and snowfall

As of this Thursday, ten areas on the Portuguese mainland are under a yellow warning due to cold weather and snowfall forecasts, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

In the areas of Bragança, Viseu, Guarda and Vila Real, a warning is in effect until 09:00 Friday due to the continued low minimum temperatures.

These four areas are also under yellow alert from Friday 2pm to Saturday 3pm due to predicted snowfall above 600/800 meters.

The areas of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro, Castelo Branco, Coimbra and Braga will be under yellow warning from Friday 2pm to Saturday 3pm due to snowfall above 600/800 meters.

A yellow warning, the least severe, is issued by the IPMA whenever a risk situation arises for certain weather-dependent activities.

IPMA predicts cold weather until at least the weekend with a drop in maximum temperature from 05 to 10 degrees Celsius due to air masses of polar origin.

Strong winds are also forecast, especially in the coastal strip and highlands, and more frequent rain on Friday, which may be accompanied by a thunderstorm with hail, wind and ice, in the interior of the country frost.

In line with IPMA forecasts, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Administration (ANEPC) has warned the public about the risks of inhaled gas poisoning due to inadequate ventilation and home fires resulting from misuse of fireplaces and braziers or faulty electrical circuits.

The ANPC recommends that special attention be paid to the most vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly and people with chronic conditions and the homeless population.

The authorities are also paying attention to the dangers of slippery floors and the possible formation of water and ice sheets, as well as the possibility of falling branches or trees due to strong winds.

The ANEPC also advises citizens to avoid prolonged exposure to the cold, wear multiple layers of clothing, and exercise caution about outdoor physical activity.
