The common front of civil servants’ unions announced this Thursday a nationwide strike on March 17 demanding immediate wage increases and recognition of careers and public services in the face of the “impoverishment system” of workers.
“It will be a major public administration strike,” said the leader of the Common Front, Sebastián Santana, at a press conference in Lisbon, recalling that the strike would take place the day before the CGTU nationwide demonstration called on the 18 March.
The decision to go on strike was taken at the Common Front trade union summit this morning, said Sebastian Santana, stressing that “the framework of the general impoverishment of the workers has been taken into account.”
Asked if the Common Front was ready for a general strike along with other trade union structures, the trade union leader said that “the date has been announced” and that everyone will be “very happy about this day of struggle.”
The CGTP also announced on Friday a national demonstration in Lisbon on March 18 to demand immediate increases in wages and pensions and to protest rising costs of living.
