Rada today marks the first anniversary of the war in Ukraine with debates and a minute of silence

This Friday, the Assembly of the Republic marks the first year of the war in Ukraine with thematic debates, with speeches by the Speaker of Parliament, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and parties, among other initiatives.

At 9:00 a.m., Parliament observes the start of the Russian invasion with a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the war in the atrium of Passos Perdidos, a moment that will be attended by Chargé d’Affaires of the Ukrainian Embassy in Lisbon, Volodymyr Kozlov, as well as members of the Bureau of Parliament and MPs.

At 10:00 am, the thematic debates proposed by the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, begin with his speech.

The discussion will last about two hours and will count on the participation of Foreign Minister Joao Gomes Cravinho, representing the government, and statements by the parties.

During the voting, a vote of solidarity with Ukraine, proposed by the speaker of parliament, will take place.

At 14:00, the Portuguese-Ukrainian Parliamentary Friendship Group will organize an invasion anniversary colloquium aimed at “reflecting on the consequences of this security crisis in Europe”, which will be attended by Augusto Santos Silva and Head of Business at the Ukrainian Embassy in Lisbon, Volodymyr Kozlov.

João Gomes Cravinho will be at the plenary session of the Assembly of the Republic a day after it was announced in Brazil that President Lula da Silva would address the Portuguese Parliament in a formal session on April 25, prompting criticism from some parties over the fact that he was head of Portuguese diplomacy to promote information.

Lusa was told by the Office of the President of the Assembly of the Republic that Augusto Santos Silva would only decide on the agenda for the commemorative meeting on April 25 “in due time” and after hearing the leaders’ conference.
