The Minister of Defense said in Kyiv that it is important to set realistic goals for support

The defense minister said this Friday in Kyiv that it was important to set realistic goals for Ukraine’s support, saying that despite the restrictions, Portugal manages to “help in many ways”.

“It is important not only to set unrealistic goals, but also to fulfill the obligations assumed. We are a reliable and reliable ally and this is our heritage that we want to preserve and strengthen,” said Helena Carreiras after meeting with her. colleague from Ukraine, Oleksiy Reznikov, in Kyiv.

The Minister of Defense was in the Ukrainian capital this Friday on behalf of the government of Portugal. This Friday marks the one year anniversary of the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine.

Asked what else Portugal can do to help Ukraine, especially now that a colleague of Helena Carreiras has announced a counter-offensive to try to push Moscow’s forces out of the Donetsk region, Helena Carreiras replied that everything Portugal has done since February 24 last year, was shared with other member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the European Union and the contact group on Ukraine.

“Of course, there are restrictions, there are restrictions, but there are also opportunities to help in different ways,” the official said, namely training in the use of Leopard 02 A6 combat vehicles that Portugal will send to Ukraine.

Portugal will send three Leopard 2s as part of a joint NATO effort in response to a request made a few months ago by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Early in the morning, the Minister of National Defense took part in a ceremony organized by the President of Ukraine with diplomats from various member states of the European Union and other people who support the country.

Helena Carreiras considered it necessary to convey the idea that it is possible to move forward only through the channels of dialogue and “to build a world where borders are not determined by force.”

“The defense of Ukraine is also our defense. The security of Ukraine is connected with the security of Europe,” he concluded.
