Storm leaves 3,300 people without power in southern Mozambique

Tropical Storm Freddie left about 3,300 Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) customers without power in the southern province of Inhambane, the public company said in a statement this Saturday.

The hurricane knocked down 21 medium voltage poles and destroyed a transformer pole, affecting the areas of Vilanculo, Inhassuro, Mabote, Massinga and Funhaluro.

“EDM tech teams are on site intervening on the grid to gradually restore” power, but adverse weather conditions and the inaccessibility of some locations “have been the biggest hurdles,” the company says.

“The total cost of reparations for the damage caused to Inhambane is 6.6 million meticai (about 100,000 euros),” he concluded.

Tropical Storm Freddie caused damage to two medical centers and 24 classrooms on Friday, with no casualties reported, according to authorities.

According to meteorological services, the storm has weakened and is heading inland, and then towards Zimbabwe, however, retaining the opportunity to cause heavy rains in the coming days.

The forecast keeps the south of the country in suspense, where river flows are high and the soil is saturated with floods recorded since the beginning of the month, especially in Maputo and the surrounding area.

The depression that reached Mozambique on Friday crossed the island of Madagascar this week as a tropical cyclone, killing seven people and affecting 78,000.
