Finance Minister Fernando Medina confirmed on Tuesday that he is awaiting the findings of the TAP audit requested by the Inspector General of Finance (IGF) to “draw the necessary conclusions from there,” which include “enforcing the rule of law.” .
Fernando Medina spoke at a regimental hearing before the Commission on Budget and Finance (COF) in Parliament in response to a statement by PCP MP Duarte Alves.
“Having asked the IGF to make a report, I am waiting for the conclusions of the report to draw the necessary conclusions from there,” he said.
The official assured that “findings are always aimed at ensuring the legitimacy of the state and, in this case, an important company in the universe of the state.”
On Monday, the President of the Republic clarified that he believes the IGF report on compensation paid to Alexandra Reis by TAP could lead to “legal rather than political consequences.”
Speaking to reporters at the end of a ceremony at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stressed that the finance minister “already said” that he would comment on the report and then “draw conclusions or not, imagine that the conclusions are that all this legal,” adding that even “if it’s not all legal,” there could be “various types of violations.”
On Saturday, the President of the Republic said Finance Minister Fernando Medina should consider the implications of the IGF’s findings on compensation paid to former Secretary of State Alexandra Reis.
SIC Notícias reported last Friday evening that the IGF’s draft opinion points to irregularities in the process related to TAP’s €500,000 compensation payment to former administrator and former finance minister Alexandra Reis.
On Sunday, the Treasury Department clarified that the IGF’s inspection action regarding compensation paid to former TAP administrator Alexandra Reis is still “in the adversarial phase” and a final report will be released at a later date.
“IGF inspection activities are still ongoing and are at a controversial stage. Only after this phase will a final report be prepared and sent to the government,” Fernando Medina’s ministry explained in a statement.
According to the guardianship, “once the inspection is completed and a report is prepared, the finance minister will promptly make the findings public and determine what should be imposed to fully guarantee legality.”
