In February, the United States continued to be the main supplier of gas to Portugal, accounting for more than a third of deliveries, followed by Russia and with a focus on the relationship with Spain, ADENE said Thursday.
In the February Natural Gas Monthly Bulletin released this Wednesday, the Energy Agency (ADENE) reports that the United States continues to be the top country in Portugal’s natural gas supply with a 37% share, followed by Russia (22.6%). ), Nigeria (20.3%) and gas imported through interconnections with Spain (20%).
“It should be noted that a fifth of all imported gas was produced through interconnections with Spain – gas pipelines – which has not happened since the end of 2018,” the agency said in a statement.
In February this year, natural gas consumption was 4,892 gigawatt hours (GWh), down 1.5% from the same month in 2022.
“The electricity market, which corresponds to natural gas consumed by combined cycle power plants for electricity generation, accounted for 48% of consumption, with the remaining 52% destined for the conventional market,” ADENE points out.
The agency data also shows that electricity consumption in February this year was 4,244 GWh, up 3.1% from the same month in 2022.
The provision of electricity consumption consisted of non-renewable thermal sources 31.3% (mainly natural gas), hydropower 27.6%, wind 27.5%, biomass 5.7% and photovoltaic solar energy 5%.
In addition, according to ADENE, the month of February was also marked by “a strong drop in the water component compared to the previous month – 51.6% – but with a much higher percentage than in the same month, which only provided 5.1% of the holiday electricity”.
