Workers at Santa Casa da Misericordia in Povoa de Varzim denounce the infestation of cockroaches and scabies.

About 20 workers at Santa Casa da Misericordia in Povoa de Varzim denounced the presence of cockroach plague and scabies in the facility through the union. Employees held a protest this Monday as more than 30 users and six workers have already been affected by the outbreak.

for what morning Post found out that this is not the first infection. Marisa Ribeiro, coordinator of the union, reports that a similar situation was reported last October. At that time, cockroaches were present in almost every room.

“We have these problems now, they already existed at that time. We have sent a series of emails to the Ombudsman and Santa Casa da Misericordia but have not received any response,” says Marisa.

The union coordinator points out that most of the employees have already been sick with scabies since October, which meant that many had to go on vacation. “Workers get scabies and are worried because they are afraid of infecting their families. They also have to pay for medicines and take sick leave when they can’t handle it, thus losing wages,” he explains.

TO cmMarisa says the cockroach infestation mostly takes place in the kitchen, and some employees are already refusing to use the area for eating due to poor hygiene conditions.

The Ombudsman of Santa Casa da Misericordia says the situation is under control.

But Marisa Ribeiro replies: “If the ombudsman really cared about stopping this outbreak, there would not be more than 36 cases of scabies, as now.”
