Cases of violence against healthcare workers increased by 70% in 2022 compared to 2021, with PSP reporting 1,632 cases, police said this Thursday, which marks the first anniversary of the Health in Safety program.
The Public Security Police said in a statement that there were 671 more incidents of violence against healthcare workers in 2022 than in 2021.
According to PSP, psychological violence is the main type of violence, present in 69% of cases, followed by moral harassment (13% of situations), physical violence (10%) and violence against the property of professionals or companies. (7%).
The PSP emphasizes that this increase in the number of records is “a reflection of the work done with institutions both to raise awareness of reported incidents of violence and to put in place schemes for reporting these cases.”
The police note that some institutions, where there were only episodic records of specialists, began to regularly record all episodes on a special platform of the General Directorate of Health.
The PSP data was released on the occasion of the first anniversary of Friday’s Health in Safety, a public policing initiative targeted at the health sector and recommended in the Health Sector Violence Prevention Action Plan.
This program, according to the PSP, aims to “prevent and monitor violence in the National Health System (NHS), promote a culture of safety in the NHS, encourage partnerships at the regional and local level, promote the training of police officers as well as healthcare professionals and increasing police visibility in hospital centres”.
About 80% of the hospital departments and medical centers that are part of the SNA structure are under the responsibility of the PSP.
“Police actions in hospital centers in a preventive context are carried out either by holding awareness-raising activities for medical workers, when various safety tips are given to be taken into account during personal care and visits. at home by medical workers — or by increasing the visibility of the police in hospital wards,” the security service also mentions.
To commemorate the first year of this program, an online forum dedicated to PSP and SNS coordinators will be held on March 17 to take stock of the initiatives implemented during this first year of the program and to discuss and set the agenda for 2023.
