This Thursday, an 81-year-old man suffered severe burns to his hands and face while staying in a house on Rua Casal de São João, in the parish union of Montemor-o-Velho e Gatões.
“The victim had severe burns to his upper limbs and face. He was helped and stabilized on the spot by our rescuers with the support of Cantanhede’s SIV (Emergency Ambulance) units and the VMER (Emergency Resuscitation Medical Vehicle) brigade. ) from INEM,” said Gonzalo Ramos, Firefighter Class 1, from the Montemor-o-Velho Volunteers, who took over the command of Operations and Assistance (COS).
Part of the kitchen furniture began to burn, but the wife of the victim, who was walking in the yard, put it out, noticed the explosion and immediately asked for help. The alarm was announced at 17:09.
“The gas cylinder was outside the house and was not affected by the explosion, which could have occurred due to the fact that they forgot to turn on the stove burner. Damage was in the kitchen and in the next room on the ceiling, furniture, doors and windows, but did not leave the couple homeless,” COS said.
The elderly man was taken in serious condition to the burns department of the Hospital and University Center of Coimbra. The rescue involved 14 Montemor-o-Velho, INEM and GNR fire operatives.
The causes of the explosion are being investigated.
