The couple were arrested on Thursday evening by GNR da Mealhada in Lameira de Santa Eufemia, in Mealhada, on suspicion of stealing about 300 kg of copper from the Beira Alta railway line.
A man and woman, aged 31 and 41, took advantage of a power outage between Pampilosa in Mealhada and Trezoya in Mortagua to interfere with the railroad to steal copper from high voltage lines.
During the investigation, the GNR seized, in addition to the stolen copper, cutting tools and a minibus.
In recent weeks, there have been several thefts of copper in the intervention area, which have already caused damage in the amount of about half a million euros. Earlier this month, the GNR arrested a man suspected of the same crime in the same area.
The couple, who live in the Albergaria a Velha area, will be presented to a criminal judge to be heard at the first judicial examination. In the end, the two defendants will hear about the imposed coercive measures.
