The government approved this Thursday in the Council of Ministers a proposal for the Military Programming Law for the period 2023 to 2034, a diploma establishing public investment in the maintenance, equipment and armament of the Armed Forces.
“This diploma is issued in a context marked by the return of war to Europe, when NATO and EU member countries are facing threats and challenges in their defense dimension, which reinforces the need to modernize and strengthen the armed forces, which allows them to carry out their planned tasks. and the commitments made both within the framework of multilateral relations and within the framework of the bilateral support requested from Portugal,” the statement released after the meeting said.
The government has also approved a proposal for a Military Infrastructure Law that sets out an investment program for the preservation and maintenance of buildings and other property belonging to the armed forces over the next 12 years. In a statement, the government expects the instrument to allow “the continuation of other public policies, such as the transfer of property for affordable rent.”
Two bills will be submitted to the Assembly of the Republic, and in order for them to become viable, they must be approved by an absolute majority of deputies, 116.
Regarding the proposed Military Programming Act, the government also emphasizes that the diploma will provide investment in research and development that will “directly affect the build-up of military capabilities.”
