On Tuesday, the SDP held the prime minister responsible for the current housing market situation and warned the government that it must either amend its program and follow the directions of the Social Democrats’ proposals or face outright opposition and vote no.
These positions were set forth by the Vice President of the PSD, António Leitao Amaro, in Parliament at a press conference, in which he tried not to comment in detail on the criticism expressed by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, regarding the proposals already presented to the socialist executive regarding housing.
António Leitão Amaru included the position of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in a series of criticisms already made by former President of the Republic Cavaco Silva, various parties, associations and representatives of the housing sector regarding the direction of government measures.
“More than commenting on what the President of the Republic wanted or didn’t want – it’s even unusual for us – is to ask who is responsible for the criticism that all political, social and institutional agents make. was the one who announced these measures. He is responsible for the crisis and disaster that has occurred in these seven years,” the former Social Democrat Secretary of State argued.
On Monday, after visiting the DTV facilities, the President of the Republic considered that the Government’s set of measures for housing construction “does not work.”
“I mean, from the very beginning, he does not work either at the point of departure or at the point of arrival,” said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
Asked if the PSD likes this position, as outlined by Marcelo Rebelo de Souza, António Leitao Amaro replied: “It’s not a matter of like it or not, the PSD was one of the first – and continues to be – condemning the profound mistake of the Government.”
“The government is getting more isolated and more wrong in trying to get deeper into this housing crisis, exacerbating it with its inability to act,” he accused.
However, according to the SDP vice-president, the PS government “still has a few days to change its position, to abandon its wrong decisions.”
“And he has a great beacon, a great proposal for what could be a housing package that works and that has been approved by this parliament: an alternative SDP path that combines supply stimulus measures and bringing more homes to market with temporary support. . measures to meet demand,” he said.
Last week, the PSD projects in the field of housing in general became possible thanks to the majority of the PS in Parliament.
In front of reporters, António Leitao Amaro is trying to emphasize the idea that the government and PS “still have time to make adjustments”.
“If they don’t, the PSD guarantees the Portuguese that it will stand firm against all these wrong decisions. An opposition that will not result not only in condemnation, but also in a vote. These drastic measures [do Governo] the end,” he said.
