Navy warns of maritime disturbances on the continent from Thursday to Saturday

The Navy and the National Maritime Authority are warning this Wednesday of a “significant deterioration” in weather conditions and rough seas on the Portuguese mainland from 6:00 am Thursday to noon Saturday.

In the statement, these organizations refer to forecasts by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) that sea waves “will be characterized by waves emanating from the northwest quadrant, with a significant height that can reach seven meters and a maximum of 13 meters with an average period of 13 to 16 seconds.”

In connection with these forecasts, the Navy and the National Maritime Administration are alerting the entire maritime community and the general population of the precautions to be taken, both in preparation for going to sea and while at sea or in coastal areas.

They warn of strengthening moorings and maintaining a tight watch on moored and anchored ships to avoid walking near the sea or in areas prone to rough seas, examples of which are the protective piers of ports, cliffs or beaches, so that people are not surprised by high waves.

They also warn the public against recreational fishing, especially near cliffs and bluffs and bluffs that are often hit by breaking waves, bearing in mind that under these conditions the sea can easily reach seemingly safe areas.

This Wednesday morning, the IPMA had already placed nine areas on the mainland under a “yellow warning” until Friday due to a sea wave forecast with NW waves of 4 to 4.5 meters, a warning that is now being aggravated by the navy.

The notice is for the areas of Porto, Aveiro, Faro, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja (Alentejo Coast) and Braga.

A “Yellow Warning”, the least severe, is issued by the IPMA whenever a risk situation arises for certain weather-dependent activities.
