Marcelo invites Dominican colleague to visit and looks forward to digital collaboration

Head of State Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa announced this Thursday that he had invited Dominican President Luis Abinadere to visit Portugal during the web summit and said he expected to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the digital sector.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spoke in Santo Domingo, at the National Palace, after meeting his Dominican counterpart Luis Abinader at the start of his one-day official visit to the Dominican Republic, which he said was the first visit by a Portuguese President.

“I invited President Abinadere to Lisbon at the end of this year, probably during the web summit, the digital summit, which will take place in November. We want him to be with us. We want the Dominican Republic to be stronger with us in the digital revolution,” he said.

Along with Luis Abinader, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that this was “the first visit of a President of Portugal to the Dominican Republic” and added that “his visit in November will be the first visit of a President of the Dominican Republic to Portugal”.

The head of the Portuguese state believes that “the agreements signed today will quickly expand bilateral cooperation between the Dominican Republic and Portugal.”

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was referring to the framework agreement on cooperation between the two countries and the memorandum of understanding in the field of higher education and artificial intelligence, signed by Portuguese Foreign Minister João Gomes Cravinho and Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez. .

Before statements to the media, the heads of the Portuguese and Dominican states, without the right to ask questions, exchanged orders.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa awarded Luis Abinadere the Order of the Grand Collar of Infante D. Enrique, and his colleague was awarded the gold plate of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit for Duarte, Sánchez and Mella.

This official visit comes ahead of the 28th Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, which will be held from Friday to Saturday in Santo Domingo under the motto “Together for a Just and Sustainable Ibero-America”, where Portugal will be represented. President of the Republic and Prime Minister António Costa.
