The President of the Republic and the Prime Minister will meet today with their counterparts in Luxembourg and with the Portuguese community living in that country to call for participation in the local elections on 11 June.
The visit to Luxembourg was announced on the occasion of the 2024 European Championship qualifier between the two countries at 20:45 local time (19:45 Lisbon), but Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and António Costa decided to take the opportunity to appeal against the participation of the Portuguese in local elections.
“I am going to Luxembourg with the prime minister to appeal to the Portuguese community to see if they will vote, it is absurd to have the strongest community in Luxembourg. [e uma parte não votar]. This could be decisive, the Luxembourgish politicians are all asking the Portuguese to register and vote, now they have a reprieve until April 17, let’s see if we can convince them,” the head of state told reporters in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. on the sidelines of the Ibero-American summit.
There are two elections in Luxembourg this year: local on June 11, the registration deadline for which is April 17, and legislative on October 8.
Portugal is the largest foreign community in Luxembourg. In 2021, there were over 93,000 Portuguese living in the country, representing 30% of the total population.
The meeting of the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister with the Portuguese community is scheduled for 18:00 local time (17:00 in Lisbon).
However, the agenda of the head of state begins at 17:00 local time (16:00 in Lisbon) with a personal meeting with the Grand Duke of Luxembourg at the Grand Duke’s Palace.
At the same time, the Prime Minister of Portugal will meet with his Luxembourg counterpart Xavier Bettel.
A note released by António Costa’s office said the chief executive will discuss “economic aspects” with Luxembourg’s prime minister, as well as “the importance of the participation of the Portuguese community in local elections.”
