Santos Silva thanks Jeronimo for “dedicating decades to parliamentary life”

The President of the Assembly of the Republic thanked the outgoing Secretary General of the PCP Jeronimo de Souza on Tuesday for his “decades of dedication to parliamentary life” after the farewell meeting.

“I received Deputy Jeronimo de Souza, who was kind enough to say goodbye in person. I thanked him for his many years of dedication to parliamentary life, as well as for the lofty attitude and sympathy with which he always communicated with other deputies, ”wrote Augusto Santos Silva. on your Twitter account with photos of the meeting.

After the announcement of the replacement of the communist general secretary last Saturday, Jeronimo de Souza submitted on Tuesday a letter of resignation from the mandate of the deputy of the Assembly of the Republic.

Jeronimo de Souza will be replaced by Duarte Alves, one of the party’s youngest leaders.

Duarte Alves, 31, was number three in the Lisbon constituency in the last legislative elections (in which the PKP elected only two deputies, Jeronimo de Souza and Alma Rivera) and will replace the outgoing general secretary.

The Economist had already been an MP during the 13th and 14th Legislative Assemblies and was known for serving on a commission to investigate Novo Banco’s losses attributed to the Resolution Fund. In parliament, he followed issues such as the state budget and finances, as well as energy.

On Saturday evening, the PCP announced that Jeronimo de Souza would no longer be general secretary and that 46-year-old Paulo Raimundo had been proposed to take his place. Almost 18 years later, Jeronimo de Souza said that due to health reasons, he abandoned his last term as party leader midway through, to which he was elected in November 2020.

Paulo Raimundo, one of the few leaders who make up the Central Committee, the Political Commission and the Secretariat (he is also the newest member of this body), is familiar with communist bases but has a residual media presence.

This choice, confirmed to journalists on Sunday by the outgoing secretary general himself, aroused surprise in the Central Committee, but in the end was approved by the majority.

On Sunday, at a press conference on the conclusions of the latest Central Committee meeting, Jeronimo de Souza also announced that he would cease being an MP and admitted that he would not return to the Assembly of the Republic for a final intervention.
