The President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, thanked Jerónimo de Souza this Saturday for the “tremendous contribution” to the Portuguese democratic institutions, in response to the announcement of his resignation from the post of General Secretary of the PCP.
“The day it is announced that Deputy Jeronimo de Souza will no longer be, at his request, Secretary General of the PCP, the time has come to thank him for the great contribution he has made to Portuguese democratic institutions,” wrote Augusto Santos. Silva on her Twitter account.
In a PKP statement, it was announced that Jeronimo de Sousa, “reflecting on the state of his health and the demands of his duties, has raised the question of replacing him in his functions” as General Secretary of the PKP.
At the meeting of the Central Committee of the PKP, scheduled for next Saturday, November 12, “a proposal will be made to elect Paulo Raimundo as General Secretary of the PKP”, according to the same statement.
Jeronimo de Souza, a former worker and deputy since the time of the Constituent Assembly, led the PKP for 18 years.
