Asturias region with 95 active fires at a time of record high temperatures.

The region of Asturias in northern Spain had 95 active forest fires as of Saturday morning. Gov. Adrian Barbon believes most of these fires were started by arsonists, whom he called “fire terrorists,” Reuters reported. The police have already confirmed that they have several investigations open, but the identity of the arsonist has not yet been established.

More than 600 firefighters were sent to fight the fire, several cities were evacuated. According to the Spanish newspaper Voice of Asturias, the governor will demand to recognize the region as a disaster zone. “They are burning our Asturias. We are dealing with real terrorists who endanger people’s lives, cities and towns,” the head of the regional government, Adrian Barbon, wrote on Twitter.

A combination of poor rainfall, high temperatures and winds has put much of northern Spain at high risk of wildfires.

According to the meteorological agency AEMET, on March 29 this Wednesday in Spain was recorded the hottest day when the temperature exceeded normal values by 7-14 degrees Celsius.

The Spanish government said it was concerned that there would be more fires this year after an unusually dry winter in southern Europe.
