Very high concentrations of pollen in the atmosphere across the country until Thursday

The Portuguese Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (SPAIC) predicts until Thursday very high pollen concentrations in the atmosphere for all regions of the continent, moderate levels for the Azores and low levels for Madeira.

According to the pollen bulletin prepared by SPAIC, pollen present in the air mainly comes from oaks, pines and plane trees, nettles and parietaria grasses.

Forecasts until April 6 in Lisbon (region of Lisbon and Setúbal) indicate very high pollen levels, dominated by pollen from holm oaks, oaks, plane trees, cypress, nettles and parietaria grasses.

In the interior of the country and in the Algarve, grass and plantain pollen begins to appear in the air and gradually acquire importance, while birch pollen concentrates in the north.

According to SPAIC, outdoor activities with high pollen concentrations should be avoided.

“Gardening, lawn mowing, hiking or outdoor sports increase pollen exposure and allergy risk,” he adds.

He also recommends keeping your car windows closed when you travel to reduce your exposure to pollen. Motorcyclists must wear full face helmets.

At home, society recommends keeping windows closed when pollen concentrations are high.

SPAIC also believes that drug treatment will be the most effective way to manage allergy symptoms, recommends seeing a specialist immunoallergist for the correct diagnosis and prescribing the most appropriate medication, and warns that prevention “may involve allergy vaccines.”

Each week, the Pollen Bulletin publishes data on pollen levels in the atmosphere, collected by reader posts in various regions of the country.
