This Tuesday, the governor of the Bank of Portugal unleashed a “war of numbers”, saying that available data shows that Portuguese who changed jobs in 2022 started earning 15% more, while those who stayed in the same job saw wages. growth from 5% to 6%. This year, referring to social security data for January, Mario Centeno said that the average wage has increased by 9.2%, by about 200 euros, compared to the same period in 2022.
The data presented by Centeno in Parliament turned into a “war of numbers” between the governor and MPs, who cited data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) indicating a deterioration in wages in 2022. Centeno has guaranteed that INE will revise as the numbers are rising lately.
The governor also said that the Euribor rate has already reached its maximum for a period of 12 months, and the remaining (three months and six months) is expected to peak in August, which will ease mortgage payments from now on.
