Poland’s agriculture minister resigns after protests against duty-free grain imports from Ukraine

Poland’s Agriculture Minister Henryk Kowalczyk resigned from his post on Wednesday amid growing dissatisfaction among farmers over the impact of Ukrainian grain imports on prices.

Kovalchik, quoted by Reuters, said he decided to resign due to the decision of the European Commission to extend the duty-free import of Ukrainian grain until June 2024.

Polish farmers called for the introduction of tariffs on Ukrainian grain. “Since it is clear that the European Commission will not grant this request at this time, I have taken the decision to step down as Minister of Agriculture,” Kowalck said.

The prime ministers of five states, including Poland, wrote to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Friday demanding that measures be taken against agricultural imports from Ukraine.
