The IX Congress of People-Animals-Nature (PAN) will take place on May 20 in Matosinhos, the organizing committee told Lusa, while Ines Souza Real and Nelson Silva have already nominated candidates for the leadership of the party.
According to the coordinator of the organizing committee of the IX Congress, Marta Correia, the delegates will meet at the Escola Básica de Matosinhos of Porto district, and the date and place were unanimously approved at the meeting of the National Political Commission, which took place on Thursday evening.
When asked that the main meeting had only one day (the last one had two days), the facilitator replied that this was due to the “current moment of the party”, namely on a financial level.
The agenda is “still closed,” he said, but the regulations have already been approved, also unanimously.
In accordance with the rules of the IX PAN Congress, the lists of candidates for the National Political Commission (the broader political governing body) and the corresponding Global Strategy Proposal must be submitted to the organizing committee by April 21 and “consist of 27 current members and a minimum of 12 alternates.”
“Members of the National Political Commission are elected in statutory terms proportionally, according to the d’Hondt method, from among the lists submitted, with the exception of the representative who is selected from the first candidate in the list that received the largest number of votes,” the document says. up the text.
The regulation states that, until May 3, “applications may be merged and therefore new lists of candidates can be submitted with the corresponding global strategic proposals resulting from the merger process.”
April 21 is also the deadline for nominating candidates for the National Board of Jurisdiction and for making proposals to amend the bylaws.
Industry proposals must be submitted by May 4th.
“Once the National Congress convenes, the regional and district assemblies shall proceed with the election of their respective delegates between May 6 and May 14, 2023,” the ordinance reads, which clarifies that they may elect and be elected only as delegates to Congress. “affiliates and affiliates with regulated quotas up to 72 hours before the election.”
The organizing committee expects “about 100 delegates” to attend, Marta Correia told Lusa.
The current press secretary, Inés Sousa Real, has already announced her re-candidacy for the leadership of PAN with the aim of “expanding the voice and representation of the party” and re-election of deputies in Madeira and in the European Parliament.
Inés de Souza Real has been the PAN representative since June 2021, being the only leader candidate at the last congress, and is currently the only MP from the party in the Assembly of the Republic.
Also a candidate is former MP Nelson Silva, who is supported by the internal current of opinion “More PAN, act to renew”. Nelson Silva wants to expand on the topics the party should focus on, which he believes are not reaching the people due to “round and niche performance.”
The former MP joined the National Political Commission and the Permanent Political Commission of the PAN (the party’s most limited body for day-to-day political management) with this mandate, but resigned last February along with other members, alleging “internal democratic suffocation”.
