The new Deputy Minister under President Thiago Cunha, 21 years old and with no professional experience, will earn almost as much as any general administrator of a public hospital.
The last member of Mariana Vieira da Silva’s team, who has a law degree but does not yet have a master’s degree, will receive about 300 euros more per month than a senior technician at the top of his career.
Tiago Cunha’s lack of experience is confirmed in a training note that is available for public comment when a new person for Vieira da Silva’s office is appointed. Compared to all other assistants and specialist technicians, Thiago Cunha, in addition to being the youngest and having the same salary, is the only one who does not have a section labeled “professional experience” in the curriculum vitae, which has been replaced by through “other relevant experience”.
In this section, the closest point to professional experience would be the position of general secretary of the National Council of Law Students, which he held between 2020 and 2021.
The position to which he is now appointed does not imply a definitive connection and is not permanent, unlike what happens with a general career in public administration.
However, in gross terms, Cunha will earn €3,732.76 per month, which is close to that of an Ombudsman Coordinator, who is at level 64 of the Uniform Civil Servant Compensation Table. With lower salaries than the Assistant Minister, Nurse Managers are at the top of their careers who, despite being part of a special career, earn the same as Senior Technicians, with a monthly income of €3,404.60 .
