Nearly 100 residents of the Jamaica neighborhood began to be relocated

Nearly 100 residents of the Vale de Chicharos (Jamaica area) in Seixal began resettling on Tuesday in a new phase of a process begun in 2018, the municipality said.

This phase of resettlement, which covers 98 people (32 families), is explained in a statement by the Seixal City Council, will last until the 13th with the demolition of buildings and general cleaning of the land.

Since the beginning of this process, 396 people have already been resettled in Vale de Chicharos, who have now been joined by 98 more, for a total of 494 people/171 families.

In January, 37 families from the microdistrict (119 people) were resettled, and in October another 37 families were resettled.

The Câmara do Seixal (CDU) of Setúbal County believes that the entire resettlement process of Vale de Chicharos, which began in December 2018, will be completed by the end of the year.

In 2017, an exhaustive survey of the number of inhabitants of the microdistrict was carried out.

At that time, a census was taken of 234 families, about 750 people, with the right to be included in the resettlement process in accordance with the protocol established between the Municipality of Seixal and the Institute of Housing and Urban Rehabilitation approved by the Housing Status Secretariat.

Autarkija explains that the adopted resettlement model was to acquire and restore housing scattered throughout the municipality, with the aim of fully integrating the inhabitants of the Vale de Chicaros into the Seixal community.

For Mayor Paulo Silva, “the excellent integration of families already resettled in the Seixal community shows that the implementation of this resettlement model has been successful.”

Considering the size and complexity of this process, given the large number of families and the need for rapid demolition of buildings, it was decided to carry out this procedure in stages.

In a statement, the municipality guarantees that it will continue to work, together with the Institute of Housing and Urban Rehabilitation and the Ministry of Housing, to resettle as quickly as possible the 64 families that still reside in the Vale de Chicharos.

The resettlement funding is the result of funds from the Municipality of Seixal’s application for a Recovery and Resilience Plan.
