Liz Truss will attack the “awakening culture” that has taken hold in the UK and US economies, continuing to call for a return to low taxes and less government.
In the final phase of his political comeback, Britain’s shortest-serving prime minister will deliver a speech in the US to warn free markets in the West that they are being “strangled” by authoritarian regimes like China.
The conservative supporter will also criticize French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for their meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping last week.
Speaking Wednesday to Margaret Thatcher’s right-wing think tank Heritage Foundation in Washington, Ms Truss lamented sluggish growth in the UK, which she said was nearly 30 percent slower than the US.
She will attribute the inequality to “low growth, rising costs of living and falling wages.”
“Disease is an ever-growing government. And we have to ask ourselves: are we ready enough to challenge China and the whole concept of state capitalism?
And she adds: “The sad truth is that we are seeing stagnation, redistribution and a culture of disruption in business and the economy in the UK and the US… This is leading to more taxes, more subsidies, more regulation.”
This approach has encouraged Russia and China, she says, adding: “[Russian President Vladimir] Putin and Xi have made it clear that they are allies against Western capitalism. This is why Western leaders make the mistake of visiting President Xi asking for his support to end the war. And this is a sign of weakness. Instead, we should focus our efforts on taking more steps to support Taiwan.”
Ms Trouss defeated Rishi Sunak last summer in a tax-cutting Tory leadership contest before her disastrous economic plans wiped out her premiership, handing him the keys to number 10 after just 49 days in office.
During her short tenure, she was much more aggressive towards Beijing and had to name China as an official threat to Britain.
She will use her speech to argue that the West has “allowed our adversaries to own our institutions, crowd out our campuses and fill our airwaves.”
“Not so long ago, the United States and Great Britain were absolute bastions of free enterprise, free markets and free speech… But what we are seeing now is a self-flagellation – an attack on what made us great. .”
Ms. Truss will also accuse the “cartel of complacency” in advocating higher taxes by targeting the global economic body of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
She will call on conservatives around the world to “fight for freedom” and “recognize the threat posed by authoritarian regimes and their ignorant allies in the anti-growth movement.”
“Unhappy with high taxes at home, we now see governments trying to negotiate high taxes in the free world.
“I’m talking about the OECD minimum tax agreement, which will prevent countries from lowering things like corporate taxes and make them more competitive,” she says.
