Foreign Minister Joao Gomes Cravinho said on Monday that “the recapture of Kherson is of great symbolic and military-strategic significance.” The statements were made following the meeting of the Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the Member States of the European Union in Brussels, Belgium.
Continuing the theme of the recapture of the city by Ukraine, Joao Gomes Cravinho said that this is a sign that “the war is moving in the desired direction.” However, “there are concerns about the impact of the war on a global level.”
“Ukraine will decide when is the best time to start negotiations with Russia,” he added.
New sanctions on Russia were also discussed, with the minister saying that “several countries have talked about the possibility of developing a new package”, namely “banking sanctions against legal entities”.
The meeting also approved a new package of sanctions against Iran. The foreign minister said that contrary to what the country had previously said, it now admitted that it had finally provided the drones before the start of the war. “This is already a violation of the UN recommendations,” the minister said.
