Iniciativa Liberal wants to know if Carlos Pereira was in a “judicial situation” with CGD

The Liberal Initiative (IL) will ask the Parliamentary Ethics Committee to assess whether MP Carlos Pereira (PS) was in a “judicial situation” when he was rapporteur for the commission of inquiry on the recapitalization of the Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD).

Minutes after Carlos Pereira explained why he was leaving the commission of inquiry in the TAR, IL leader Rui Rocha said it was necessary to ask if the deputy was “in a legal situation” – to “resolve the question of the debt that was responsible” in as a guarantor of a company that went bankrupt, and whether he had “conditions and could be a speaker and even a member of the commission of inquiry.”

The IL MP stated that his bench would require a parliamentary hearing of the Caixa administration to “find out what was her interference in this whole process, whether there was negligence and whether there was any intention of retaliation” against the socialist MP.

At a press conference this Friday in Parliament, Carlos Pereira said he would leave the TAP commission of inquiry to give it “the calm it needs,” ending what he called “a climate of suspicion.”

This Friday, Correio da Manhã headlined the MP’s alleged support for a €66,000 debt write-off in the repayment of a loan to the company in which he was the guarantor.

The PS MP added that he did not leave the committee because “the debt was forgiven” by Caixa Geral de Depósitos, adding that it was “a lie that there was a forgiveness”, services or incompatibilities.
