The SDP chairman this Monday declined to add another word about Chega’s party and assured that on Tuesday he would go to Belém to tell the President of the Republic that he was “ready” to become an alternative to the PS government.
Speaking to reporters upon arrival at the Rossio station, arriving by train from Kasem, as part of the first initiative of the Sentir Portugal initiative this week dedicated to the Lisbon area, Luis Montenegro was asked to clarify, in an interview with CNN Portugal on Friday Thursday, when he said he refuses to have a government or support for racist, xenophobic or populist politicians or policies, he meant Cheg.
“I don’t think it’s necessary to get ahead or add anything else to what I said, I don’t want, I won’t, there’s no need to add anything,” he said, repeating this answer to all questions about the party led by Andre Ventura.
When asked if he would pass the red line with Chega to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa during an audience with the President of the Republic, the PSD president began by going to Belém “to analyze the political, economic and social situation.”
“I am very concentrated and very focused on fighting PS and showing that there is a path that gives more hope, more growth. I have nothing more to add. [sobre o Chega] if not to repeat to the Portuguese that the SDP walks around the country every day and talks to people in all conditions to listen to their problems and find solutions for the future,” he said.
When asked if this clarification regarding Chega was motivated by challenges from the President of the Republic, Montenegro again did not answer directly: “I feel that Portugal needs a new government and I am ready,” he said, assuring that he would “obviously” say Belen that the SDP is already an alternative to the PS government.
The President of the Republic again ruled out the possibility of dissolution at the beginning of last week, citing the situation and the lack of “an obvious political alternative”, while Luis Montenegro indirectly replied two days later to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who assured that he would not be in the pocket of either the government or at the opposition.
An audience between them is scheduled for 3:00 pm on Tuesday, the second day of Sentir Portugal in Lisbon.”
The “Sentir Portugal” initiative was taken over by Luis Montenegro at the 40th PSD Congress to spend one week a month in different areas of the country, this week is dedicated to the Lisbon area and started today in the municipality of Sintra and will pass through de Oeiras before returning to capital.
