Police confirmed on Monday that the murder of a young Portuguese-born man on Saturday in London is under investigation and the family has issued an appeal to raise funds for the funeral.
Filipe Oliveira, 20, was found stabbed in a building in West Norwood in the south of the British capital at 18:00, according to the London Metropolitan Police.
Despite the efforts of doctors and an ambulance call, the young man died on the spot.
Over the next 12 hours, the police imposed a special regime in Lambeth County to be able to stop and search suspicious individuals, but so far no arrests have been made and security perimeters have been removed.
Police also filed a public appeal with a description of the suspect, hoping to find witnesses or records.
“Our investigation has made significant progress, but I continue to urge any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward,” lead investigator Kate Blackburn said.
The West Norwood area, which is part of the London Borough of Lambeth, has a large concentration of Portuguese residents and businesses.
Filipe Oliveira’s family, however, launched a fundraising appeal to pay for “the funeral and say goodbye, as befits the good man he was.
Approximately 24 hours later, the appeal exceeded the target of £10,000 (€11,320).
“Our son and brother, Filipe, was tragically stolen from us due to a brutal knife crime, without any provocation,” according to a text on the website Go Fund Me, which notes that “he was a very beloved member of our family and his loss will be keenly felt forever.”
In recent years, cases of knife attacks and murders have increased in the UK, especially among young people.
In the 12 months to September 2022, there were 50,434 knife incidents in England and Wales, up 11% from the same period in 2021, according to the latest figures from the Office for Statistics (ONS).
The same agency recorded 282 homicides with a knife or sharp object in the 12 months to March 2022, the highest number in 76 years and a 19% increase from the previous year.
