Ventura says PR assured him he wouldn’t stop the government from solving the Chega issue.

Chega President Andre Ventura said this Wednesday that the President of the Republic had assured him that he would not interfere with the government’s decision, which includes his party.

“The President of the Republic will not be an obstacle to any kind of participation of Chega in the government, the President of the Republic will not be an obstacle to the construction of a government, if the political parties agree to form this government, if the bases of the party accept it, and if there is such an opportunity and this opportunity to form a majority on the right”, – he said.

The Chega leader spoke to reporters at the Belém Palace in Lisbon after a 35-minute audience with the President of the Republic.

Andre Ventura, who has already said he will ask Marcelo Rebelo de Souza for clarification following last week’s news, said what he heard “was especially important and satisfying.”

“For us, this was very important data, because if we want changes, if we want the dissolution of parliament, there must be an alternative at the same time, and it was important to clarify this with the President of the Republic. I always felt that the President of the Republic was not against a political decision that Chega participated in or was led by Chega from the right,” he said.

The President of Chega thanked Marcelo Rebelo de Souza for his “clear words” and called it a “responsible attitude”.

Asked if he no longer believes that the head of state forced the PSD leader to say that he would not accept the government’s decision with Chega, an accusation made by Ventura on Tuesday, he replied: “The President of the Republic has clearly conveyed to me and directed that she will not has nothing to do with it, that her position is such and that she will not interfere enough in the Government.

“What does the leader of the third party do in these cases? He does not invent or speculate, but comes to ask questions. I have been enlightened and I am satisfied,” he said.

Regarding the position of the President of the Republic that he will not dissolve Parliament, citing the situation and the lack of “obvious political alternative”, Andre Ventura noted that he understands this attitude.

“Only an irresponsible president can resign without knowing what will happen in the future. I think this is a challenge for the right to understand what historical moment he is in now and what he should do,” he stressed.

Leaving an audience with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Chega’s leader repeated the SDP’s challenge to present a vote of no confidence in the government, and assured once again that if the Social Democrats did not do so, his party would advance “in the first day of the next legislative session”, after the summer.

“We understand that this point of no return has almost been reached and that the normal functioning of institutions is at stake,” and he accused the government of “lack of integrity, consistency, juggling” and having “tentacles in the state apparatus.” .

Another topic that led to the meeting with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was the veto of the text on medically assisted death, and he indicated that if the law came into force, he would try to collect signatures of deputies from other parties to demand a review of constitutionality” after adoption”, a tenth of the deputies is needed, i.e. 23 (Chega has 12).

In the middle of the day, Andre Ventura admitted that he asked for “some review of this provision by the Constitutional Court before it comes into force.”
