Citizens call for a show of support for the doctor who reported the errors at the Faro hospital.

A group of citizens planned a demonstration for Saturday afternoon in the city of Faro in support of a trainee doctor who denounced alleged errors and negligence in the surgical service of the Hospital de Faro.

The demonstration was called by the movement in support of Dr. Diana Pereira, a group that has grown up on social media and asks participants to wear a black shirt, carry banners or posters hinting at the theme, and above all, keep quiet.

In a Facebook post, the organization asks for the demonstration to be silent “as a way to express sadness and dismay” and encourages people to take a photo of someone who has been neglected, with a brief testimonial, or alternatively, with only the victim’s name and a brief caption.

Earlier this month, a doctor reported 11 alleged cases of errors and sloppiness in the surgery service at the Hospital de Faro that occurred between January and March, filing a complaint with the Judicial Police against her former training adviser and director of the service. Surgery at the Hospital de Faro.

“Remember that we will be near the hospital, where there are sick and weakened people, and we are not going to upset them. […] And don’t forget: this is a citizen-for-citizen initiative,” reads the same post in the doctor’s support group, which has 800 followers.

Of the 11 reported cases, Diana Pereira said three patients died, two were hospitalized at the time of the complaint, interned in intermediate care facilities, and the rest suffered malpractice-related injuries. He added that one of the patients spent a week with compresses on his stomach.

Meanwhile, the doctor, who was heard on Wednesday at the Portimão hospital as part of an internal investigation launched by the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA), asked for the suspension of the medical internship for special training in general surgery, a measure provided for by law, while the processes investigations into reported cases are ongoing.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) also initiated a process to investigate Diana Pereira’s complaints, and the Order of Physicians announced the formation of a scientific and technical commission of experts, independent physicians, to evaluate reported cases.

The meeting point for the demonstration is scheduled for 17:00 on Saturday next to the Church of San Luis, near the Faro Hospital.
