The SDP president this Thursday called the work of Carlos Moedas in the Lisbon city council “a demonstration of the ability to transform” when the social democrats have leadership mechanisms.
As part of the “Sentir Portugal” initiative, this week dedicated to the Lisbon area, Luis Montenegro spent part of the day with the Mayor of Lisbon, with whom he dined – with other PSD mayors – and together with those who attended the unicorn factory bell in Beato and future university residence in Alameda.
“I would like to acknowledge and congratulate Carlos Moedas and his team on the city council for the work they have done that demonstrates the transformative power that PSD is capable of when it has leadership mechanisms in place. “, he praised.
The future residence, which should be completed by the end of the year, will provide 320 student beds, fully managed by the University of Lisbon, with prices set by decree and adapted to the income of the students’ families.
Montenegro emphasized that this example shows that “the municipal government is many times more diligent and faster than the central government”.
“For years, the government has promised us 15,000 new public beds in university residences, and the performance is zero. The Council does not wait and promotes equal opportunity,” he stressed, deeming it “a shame” when a student refuses the course you want because of high housing prices, especially in cities like Lisbon.
During a visit to the factory wearing a vest and hardhat, Coins assured that the rooms would be priced “very low” and tailored to each student’s family income, noting that on top of those 300, CML has another 900 public beds in the project.
“This is something completely different from the private market in terms of price, but with the same conditions and quality. I have been criticized for opening a private residence, but in Portugal we must leave this comparison between what is public and what is private. Only we solve the problem with housing and places of residence, if we are all together,” he defended.
At the end of March, the mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, opened a student residence in the Campo Pequeno area with rooms ranging from 650 to 1,100 euros, drawing criticism from the opposition.
