Portugal and Brazil vow to intensify cooperation in managing migration flows

The governments of Portugal and Brazil pledged this Saturday to intensify cooperation between the public employment services of the two countries in order to be able to manage the regular migration flows of employees.

This commitment is contained in the Final Declaration of the XIII Portuguese-Brazilian Summit taking place at the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon, a document issued prior to the joint press conference of Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa and Brazilian President Lula da Silva.

The Governments of Portugal and Brazil consider that it is necessary to “update, simplify and revise the procedures for the proper application of international instruments for the benefit of the respective communities”.

“In this context, they pledged to encourage cooperation between the public employment services of both countries in order to facilitate the management of regular migration flows of employees,” the document says.

The final communiqué mentions that António Costa and Lula da Silva congratulated “the speed with which the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries Mobility Agreement has been ratified by all member states, which shows the universal commitment to strengthening the political and cultural ties that distinguish the Portuguese language at the international level” .

“Portugal and Brazil are determined to live up to the expectations of the CPLP Mobility Agreement and measures are currently being taken to advance the real mobility space,” the post reads.

The communiqué goes on to include a paragraph addressing one of the main issues raised by the Brazilian community living in Portugal.

“Embracing this commitment and this political will, Portugal last March introduced a new simplified and fast model, fully digital and accessible, for the automatic issuance of residence permit certificates for citizens of CPLP countries,” it emphasizes.

Portugal and Brazil also welcomed “the holding of a preparatory meeting last March that set the parameters for the work to be carried out by the joint commission foreseen by the administrative adjustments on the application of the Social Security Agreement, to be held in Lisbon. , next July.
