Berlin Airport cancels flights due to ground staff strike

Berlin-Brandenburg Airport has canceled all flights for this Monday due to a security and passenger control strike called by the public sector trade union Ver.di, according to the international press.

According to the news agency EFE, the intermittent stoppages of workers began at 03:00 local time (02:00 in Lisbon) and continued until the next morning.

The strike is led by Passenger Control and Flight Safety and is part of the Ver.di union’s campaign to demand higher wages and allowances for night shifts and holidays in addition to overtime.

Along with a strike day in Berlin, a partial strike at Hamburg Airport was also called this Monday, affecting a third of scheduled flights.

The strike campaign by ground personnel at German airports continues despite an agreement reached last Saturday between Ver.di and employers for a group of 2.5 million German public sector employees.

This agreement consisted of a series of special tax-free payments until February 2024 to compensate for inflation, and from March a 5.5% wage increase, which in some cases could be less than 200 euros per month.
