Several Portuguese aerospace companies and Brazil’s Embraer signed this Monday in Alverca, on the outskirts of Lisbon, a memorandum of understanding aimed at developing Portugal’s technological and industrial defense base.
The memorandum, signed at the premises of the OGMA in the presence of Brazilian President Lula da Silva and Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa, aims, namely, to “continuous development of technologies related to the A-29 Super Tucano, in its new – Launched version of the A-29N, focused on meeting the needs of NATO member countries,” said Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security.
“Today, with the signing of this MoU, we are taking another important step in the continuous development of technology related to the A-29 Super Tucano,” said Bosco da Costa Junior.
The Portuguese companies that have signed a memorandum with Embraer are the Product Design and Development Center (CEiiA), Empordef Information Technologies (ETI), GMV and OGMA (Oficinas Gerais de Material Aeronáutico).
The document was signed after the arrival at Alverca Air Base Luis Inacio Lula da Silva and António Costa from Matosinhos, where they took part in the Portuguese-Brazilian business forum, an initiative that marked the start of the third day of the official visit. head of state of Brazil.
The return to Lisbon was made aboard Embraer’s KC-390 from Brazil, from which Portugal recently purchased five such aircraft, in accordance with a contract signed in 2019 between Embraer and the Portuguese government, which provides for the delivery of five such aircraft. Aircraft KS-390 of the Portuguese Air Force – one per year, from 2023, in the amount of 872 million euros.
The possibility of exporting Embraer’s KC-390 aircraft in Portugal to other EU countries is one of the topics on the agenda of Lula da Silva’s visit.
Brazilian Defense Minister José Musio Ribeiro confirmed on Friday in Lisbon that Embraer will produce the Super Tucano aircraft to NATO standards in partnership with OGMA, in which the company has played a dominant role since 2004.
The memorandum was signed as part of the Brazilian President’s four-day state visit to Portugal, which ends on Tuesday.
