The President of Chega this Thursday considered that Augusto Santos Silva could not remain as President of the Assembly of the Republic, saying that he was no longer an “impartial arbiter” and became a representative of the PS.
“There are no conditions for Augusto Santos Silva to remain President of the Assembly. [da República]when he ceases to be an impartial arbiter between parties and becomes the mouthpiece of the socialist party, and boasts about it. He boasted about his behavior with the more or less tacit consent of the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister,” said André Ventura.
What is at stake is the statements made by Augusto Santos Silva in a video published on Wednesday by the digital newspaper Observador, in which he says that “what the Liberal Initiative has decided to do [na sessão com Lula da Silva] it’s nothing”, because “there are always those who make things worse”.
According to Andre Ventura, it was not Augusto Santos Silva, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza and António Costa who were the victims due to the disclosure of a private conversation, but their party and the Liberal Initiative.
“If [Augusto Santos Silva] puts his hand on his conscience, he will realize that he no longer has the conditions to continue the performance of his duties and that this will only increase the conflict within parliament. As long as Santos Silva remains, the level of conflict within the parliament will not decrease, but will increase,” he stressed.
Chega’s parliamentary group pasted a piece of paper on their door with a picture of Santos Silva with a red cross on top that read “No to abuse of power.”
On Wednesday, the Chairman of the Assembly of the Republic expelled Chega from the delegations visiting foreign parliaments after an incident at a welcoming meeting for Lula da Silva, where the deputies held posters with the inscriptions “Enough of corruption”, “I steal a place in prison” and others with the colors of Ukrainian flags.
