An earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale was felt this Sunday on the island of Terceira, in the municipalities of Angra de Heroismo and Praia da Vitoria, the Center for Seismic Volcanic Information and Observation of the Azores (CIVISA) said.
With an epicenter about two kilometers east of Serreta, the shock was recorded at 07:17 (08:17 in Lisbon) and was felt with maximum intensity V (modified Mercalli scale) in the parishes of Altares, Raminho, Serreta, Dose Ribeiras, Santa Barbara, San -Bartolomeu, Sant Mateus, Terra Cha and Sant Sebastian (municipality of Angra do Heroismo) and in the parish of Biscoitos (municipality of Praia da Vitoria).
According to the information available on the CIVISA website, an earthquake of intensity IV was still felt in the parishes of Santa Lucía, San Pedro, Conceição and Ribeirinha (municipality of Angra do Heroismo); with intensity IV in the district of Quattro Ribeiras (municipality of Praia da Vitoria); and with intensity III in the parish of Vila das Laies (municipality of Praia da Vitoria).
With a force of V considered “strong”, earthquakes are felt outside the home, people wake up, liquids oscillate and some leak, small objects in unbalanced equilibrium move or topple over, doors sway, close or open, while shutters and paintings move , and the clock’s pendulums stop or change their state of oscillation, as described by the Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) on its website.
At intensity IV, which is considered “moderate”, “parked cars shake”, “windows, doors and dishes shake”, and “glasses and dishes rattle or clink”, walls or wooden structures may creak.
At intensity III, considered “weak”, the impact is “felt inside the house” and “hanging objects sway”, feeling “a vibration similar to that caused by the passage of heavy vehicles”, according to IPMA.
