The Deputy General Secretary of the PS accused the SDP leader this Sunday of engaging in politics “only by reading the headlines” in order to “not comment on the good results of governance”, given that the prime minister speaks when he sees fit.
“I think that the statement of the leader of the SDP is in line with his style of leadership of the largest opposition party now. Under no circumstances, since accepting the leadership of the PSD, has Dr. Luis Montenegro been able to and has not been able to create an alternative, to present ideas, because today the PSD has become devoid of content,” Joao Torres criticized in a statement to the Lusa agency.
SDP leader Luis Montenegro considered this Sunday that the government had come to an end, and that PS President Carlos Cesar recognized this when he asked for a “refreshment” of the socialist executive.
“It is unfortunate that the leader of the SDP makes politics based on newspaper headlines,” he condemned, given that Luis Montenegro “truncated” the statements of PS President Carlos Cesar.
For João Torres, “it would be recommended that the PSD leader read the interview in its entirety, and not just stick to the headlines that were taken from that same interview.”
“The episode and the incident that took place were unfortunate and, naturally, should be regretted. Now the prime minister has to speak when he understands it is appropriate, and he does not have to do it every day, hour, minute or second, after the parliamentary commission of inquiry on the TAP,” he criticized.
According to the leader of the socialists, “the prime minister must guard and preserve the feeling of the state, which the leader of the opposition has clearly not demonstrated since he headed the SDP.”
“And so it is necessary to respect the institutions and respect the Assembly of the Republic,” he defended.
According to Joao Torres, “The Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry on the TAP is a very important tool for monitoring the government and it cannot be expected that the head of government, Prime Minister Dr. António Costa, will comment every day on new events, new documents, new facts that emerge connected with the same parliamentary commission of inquiry.”
“It must be emphasized that the government under no circumstances lost sight of the parliamentary commission of inquiry, which is its responsibility,” he stressed.
PS President Carlos Cesar defended that the prime minister should assess whether there is a need for “some updates” in government, given that “great rigor and discipline” is needed to avoid cases like those involving TAP.
