Head of State Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa on Monday sent a message of condolences to Indonesian President Joko Widodo following the earthquake in Java that killed dozens of people.
According to a note published on the official website of the President of the Republic on the Internet, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza “sent a message of solidarity and sincere condolences to the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, in connection with the numerous victims registered in the earthquake felt on Tuesday, November 21, in West Java, I wish you a speedy recovery to all the injured.”
As a result of this earthquake, which occurred in the Chanjur region, in the province of West Java, on the island of Java, at a depth of 10 kilometers, more than 50 people have already died.
Landslides have been reported around Chianjur. Dozens of buildings were damaged, including an Islamic boarding school, a hospital and other public facilities.
The earthquake was strongly felt in the Jakarta area. The capital’s skyscrapers shook, some were evacuated.
Indonesia, a country of over 270 million people, is often hit by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and “tsunamis” due to its location on the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”.
