SDP accuses government of “self-degradation” and meets tomorrow’s hardcore

The SDP on Tuesday accused the government of “drift, without effective leadership” and of “self-degradation”, sending a reaction from President Luis Montenegro on Wednesday, at the end of a meeting of the party’s Standing Committee.

The PSD reacted in a leadership statement to Prime Minister António Costa’s announcement that he does not accept the resignation of Joao Galamba as Minister of Infrastructure, a position that President Marcelo of the Republic has already disagreed with. Rebelo de Sousa, in an official note.

“The country has witnessed the self-abasement of the Portuguese government for its sole responsibility. The executive branch remains drifting, without effective leadership, with an undeniable lack of authority and in a theatrical attempt to overcome so many weaknesses,” the social democrats criticize.

For the PSD leadership, António Costa’s statement “proves that this government has turned its back on the country and institutions.”

“The PSD Standing Committee is meeting tomorrow morning to analyze the political situation in the country. In the end, the chairman of the party will speak to the country,” reports the SDP, referring to the most limited organs of the social democratic leadership.

Minutes after Joao Galamba resigned, and even before the Prime Minister announced that he would not accept it, Luis Montenegro reacted through a post on the social network Twitter.

“The departure of the Minister of Infrastructure in itself after the morning and afternoon meetings did not produce such a result, which says a lot about the leadership – or lack of it – of the Prime Minister,” wrote the social democratic president.
