The Liberal Initiative defended this Thursday that the president of the republic has “tied the evaluation of his mandate” to the next months of the prime minister’s rule, given that the two are now jointly responsible for what happens “in the near future.”
“The Prime Minister linked his political fate with Joao Galamba, the President of the Republic linked the assessment of his mandate with the next reign of António Costa,” IL President Rui Rocha defended in Parliament in response to the message. to the country of Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.
From now on, he continued, “both of them – both the president of the republic and the prime minister – bear joint responsibility for everything that happens in the near future in terms of a government decision.”
The liberal leader said that the head of the Portuguese state assessed Costa’s rule as “absolutely destructive”, calling into question the “credibility, authority, respectability of the managerial decision.”
However, he made it clear that “the vision of the future that the President of the Republic presents is in complete contradiction to the diagnosis and the overwhelming assessment he gave to the government”, disagreeing with Marcelo’s decision and believing that it should “pay tribute to the Portuguese government”. opportunity to decide your future” and that “in a democracy there are always alternatives”.
Although he does not agree with the decision presented by the president, Rui Rocha assured that IL is committed to “giving the Portuguese an alternative, a different solution” that provides “economic growth, access to healthcare, education, transport, quality public services.”
For IL, “the institutions have degraded, the government does not respect the institutions, it has no solutions for the Portuguese and is limited to managing day-to-day affairs, which is worse”, adding that “the struggle between the two palaces, São Bento and Belém” leads to instability.
“I can ask the president of the republic to be more careful, because in recent years the president of the republic has relied too much on António Costa, and António Costa is not a reliable prime minister,” he accused.
When asked if the Minister of Infrastructure should resign again, following the words of Marcelo, who believed that his retention as minister entailed costs for the authority of not only the government, but also the state, Rocha replied that “if there was a minimum of sound meaning, institutional respect and respect for the Portuguese, Joao Galamba would have long been out of government.”
The President of the Republic promised this Thursday that he would be “even more attentive and more involved in daily life” to prevent conflict factors that degrade institutions and “avoid the exercise of exclusive powers.”
In an address to the country from the Belen Palace in Lisbon, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said he did not want to use the powers given to him by the Constitution to interrupt governance, but stressed that he would not give them up.
