The SDP general secretary said this Thursday that the party agrees with the President of the Republic’s interpretation of the political situation, respects the head of state’s conclusions and warns that the government will be held responsible for the instability.
“It is very important that the Portuguese know that if an election calendar is expected in Portugal, that is, if elections are expected and if there is political instability, it is solely and exclusively due to the prime minister and the government,” accused Hugo Soares.
The Secretary General of the PSD reacted at the national headquarters to the statement of the President of the Republic of the country, who indicated that he would learn from the episode committed by Minister Joao Galamba, but stated that he would strive to maintain political stability.
“The PSD has no doubts between the testimony of the Prime Minister and the testimony of the President of the Republic about the political situation in Portugal: it sees itself in the testimony of the President of the Republic,” he said.
For the SDP general secretary, “a government that does not assume its responsibility loses credibility and weakens its credibility and credibility.”
“At PSD, we respect the conclusions made by the President of the Republic, and we say that there really is a need to increase surveillance of this government,” he defended.
Asked if the government and the Minister of Infrastructure should draw other conclusions from Marcelo Rebelo de Souza’s statement to the country, the PSD General Secretary recalled that on Wednesday, party chairman Luis Montenegro said that in his resignation letter he sent to the Prime Minister, Joao Galamba already ” laid out all the reasons” for leaving the government.
“The President of the Republic was clear, he even appealed to common sense, Minister Joao Galamba always has time to leave the government, but apparently the Prime Minister still does not want to,” he said.
The Social Democratic leader, on the other hand, denied that the SDP should speed up its internal calendar.
“The SDP should not speed up or slow down its internal calendar, the SDP has said and repeats that it is for political stability, if there are elections, it is because of inertia and distrust of the government and is preparing for elections. when they should happen,” he said.
In a statement to the country, the head of state qualified his disagreement with the Prime Minister’s decision to keep Joao Galamba as Minister of Infrastructure as a “fundamental divergence” and considered that this decision of António Costa affects “trust, reliability, in the powers of the minister, the government and the state” .
On Tuesday evening, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa already expressed his disagreement with Prime Minister António Costa’s decision to keep João Galamba as Minister of Infrastructure, saying in a written note that “he does not agree with the position of this regarding the political reading of the facts and the resulting perception of them by the Portuguese in regard to the prestige of the institutions that govern them” and emphasizing that “you cannot justify a member of the government without a proposal from the prime minister.”
In recent days, the infrastructure minister has been embroiled in a controversy with his former deputy, Federico Pinheiro, who resigned on Wednesday, over information to be provided to a parliamentary committee investigating the political tutelage of the TAP leadership.
The case concerned allegations against Frederico Pinheiro of physical abuse at the Ministry of Infrastructure and the theft of a laptop computer after being fired, and the controversy intensified when the intervention of the Information and Security Service (SIS) in the recovery of this computer was reported.
