The trip of the President of the Republic to Qatar is approved by PS deputies who voted against

On Tuesday, Parliament allowed the President of the Republic to travel to Qatar to watch the first game of the national football team in the 2022 World Cup on Thursday.

The draft resolution presented by the President of the Assembly of the Republic was approved by the bench votes of PS, PSD and PCP, Chega abstained, while IL, BE, PAN and Livre voted against.

PS deputies Isabel Moreira, Alexandra Leitao, Carla Miranda and Pedro Delgado Alves voted against this draft resolution, while PSD deputies Hugo Carneiro, António Topa Gomes and Fatima Ramos and socialists Maria Joao Castro, Miguel Rodríguez and Eduardo Alves.

The President of the Republic may not leave the territory of the country without the consent of the Assembly of the Republic in accordance with the Constitution.

In the travel request, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is asking parliament for permission to leave the country between Wednesday and Friday to watch the national team’s first game in Qatar, and admits the possibility of traveling via Cairo to attend the conference. on the theme “The Future of Quality Education” together with other heads of state.

In the same letter addressed to the President of the Parliament, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa mentions that “the participation of the highest figures of the state in the games of the national team was agreed” in the presence of the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto. Santos Silva, who will appear in the second game (November 28), and Prime Minister António Costa in the third (December 2).

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said last Thursday that “Qatar does not respect human rights” but asked for a focus on the national team, drawing criticism from several quarters.

“Qatar does not respect human rights. All the stadium building and all…but let’s forget about that. It’s frustrating, but let’s focus on the team. We started very well and finished well,” said Marcelo Rebelo de Souza at the end of the preparatory game between Portugal and Nigeria in Lisbon.

A day later, in Fatima, the head of state noted that he would attend the first game if the parliament allowed it, and assured that he intended to talk about human rights.

Also on Friday, Prime Minister António Costa said that Portuguese political leaders will be at the World Cup in Qatar supporting the national team and not violating human rights or discriminating against women in that country.

“The World Cup is there [no Qatar] and when we go there, we will definitely not support the Qatari regime, the violation of human rights in Qatar and the discrimination against women in Qatar. When we go there, we will support the national team, the team of all Portuguese, the team that carries the flag,” he said.
