The inclusion of women’s health in the coach education program and the creation of online women’s health tools are two proposals presented following research with athletes in the United Kingdom.
Approximately 800 athletes participated in the Women’s Health Study, conducted by Projeto RED’s and Kyniska Advocacy, which analyzed issues such as menstrual cycles, dietary habits and body image in women’s sports.
An investigation aimed at developing a policy for the development of women’s sports shows figures classified by the organizers as “alarming”.
According to the survey, 54% of female athletes surveyed suggest that they have already received comments about their body that caused them “very discomfort”, and 36% admitted to deliberately ignoring issues related to menstruation.
Among the athletes surveyed, 91% said they were concerned about calorie intake given their image, and 52% suggested that 52% said they limit their food intake to fit the pattern of the sport they play.
Considering the need to work on the topic, the study proposes, in addition to its inclusion in the training of coaches and the creation of online tools, the implementation of a women’s health support network led by athletes, as well as specific actions on the importance of menstruation.
The online tools offered are intended for athletes and their caregivers and should be used from the moment they start playing their respective sport.
