PS is nominating Lacerda Sales to replace the current President of the TAP Parliamentary Committee of Inquiry.

The Socialist Party nominated Antonio Lacerda Sales to chair the parliamentary committee to investigate the TAP case. The parliamentary group also confirmed the resignation of former President Jorge Seguro Sánchez.

The news of the resignation of Jorge Seguro Sánchez came after comments by the Social Democratic Party, in which, according to the parliamentary leader of the PS, they criticized the personality of the former chairman of the commission.

“But the accusation of insufficient seriousness, charged to him by the SDP deputy, is an accusation that he himself assesses as very serious. Such actions correspond to a certain idea of the degradation of institutions, to which the SDP is also related. I add,” said Eurico Brillante Diaz.

A note circulated in Parliament mentions that Jorge Seguro Sánchez has decided to “resign as chairman of the parliamentary commission to investigate the political tutelage of TAP”.

“The PS Parliamentary Group will communicate to the President of the Assembly of the Republic the name of Mr. António Lacerda Sales for the Chairman of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into the Political Custody of the TAP Governance, thanking you in advance for the sense of service and mission with which you have accepted this challenge that is now being offered to him,” it says in the same note.

PS begins by thanking the outgoing President for the “willingness he showed to serve in the Assembly of the Republic as President” of the Commission of Inquiry, confirms his trust in Jorge Seguro Sánchez, and praises “the measured, serious, strict, independent and competent manner in which he carried out his functions , believing that it contributes to the “credibility of a work in progress”.

The Socialist Party also considered “unacceptable the attack on Jorge Seguro Sánchez by a PPD/PSD parliamentarian”, arguing that it was an attack on his “personal integrity, honor and good name” and that he fled on a “decisive path” for the Socialist MP’s resignation .

On Tuesday, Jorge Seguro Sánchez found it necessary to consider whether he still had the “best conditions” to carry out his mandate and asked the vice president to replace him at that day’s hearing.

Discussion and voting on the demands, as well as debate on the grid used in the hearings, lasted for about an hour and a half before Humberto Pedrosa’s hearings, with more tense moments culminating in the appeal of socialist Jorge Seguro Sánchez to be replaced in the driver’s seat by Vice President Paulo Ríos de Oliveira, MP PSD.

After criticism from several quarters over the use of a shorter grid for this week’s hearings, the president wanted to share “with everyone” the opportunity he already opened up when he asked for a summary investigation into leaked documents.

“Trust is an important element in securing the public interest. The commission of inquiry must be able to carry out its task relentlessly, getting to the bottom of the issues, it must create trust and not waste time discussing procedures, networks or the form of access to documents and all that we have already done,” he said.

For Seguro Sanchez, “the role of chairman of the commission of inquiry must allow him to inspire confidence.”

“What I feel, with the exception of the deputies who were kind enough to share their confidence with me, was that I did not have the necessary consensus for the good work of the committee, in the way my role was called into question, in even the inelegant how I fulfill the mandate of the commission makes me wonder if I still have the best conditions to do so, and I understand that this reflection is urgent,” he warned.

Believing that not after the deputies were called and informed about the grid, they should be informed about the rule change, the socialist asked the vice president to replace him in the conduct of the work.

“And I wish you all good work, so that today [terça-feira] I won’t be here anymore. I will be at the meeting of the board and coordinators,” he said and stood up to leave the room.

At the beginning of the speech, Seguro Sanchez suggested that a meeting of the board and coordinators be held to analyze this issue after the hearing of the Humberto Pedrosa case, which never took place.
