Two Portuguese men aged 36 and 42 were arrested last Thursday for human trafficking in Spain. The operation allowed the release of 15 Portuguese who were in a situation of “modern slavery” and the elimination of the criminal group.
According to a statement by the judicial police, “the victims were captured in Portugal, in rural areas in the north of the country, and taken to areas where they were supposed to carry out their work, without family support and in a state of complete vulnerability.” The victims were then “accommodated in old unhealthy homes” and forced to work 12 hours a day, seven days a week.
The 15 freed Portuguese were taken in by Spanish institutions and will be taken to Portugal. The detainees living in Spain, who already had a criminal record for this type of crime, were presented to the authorities of the country and placed in a preventive detention center.
