The Assembly of the Republic recommends the Government to support the process of Ukraine’s accession to the EU

The Assembly of the Republic this Friday approved the recommendation to the Government of the Commission on Foreign Affairs to support the process of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union and the investigation of alleged war crimes.

This final text, based on draft resolutions submitted by PSD and PAN, was approved by a final global vote, with yes votes from PS, PSD, Chega, Liberal Initiative, BE, PAN and Livre and a negative vote from PCP.

With this initiative, the Assembly of the Republic recommends that the Government “support the process of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union and other organizations in the field of economy and cooperation in accordance with the accession criteria.”

The deputies also call on the executive branch to express “full support, including in the European Union, for the investigation launched by the ICC prosecutor.” [Tribunal Penal Internacional] on alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Ukraine, as well as work sponsored by the Commission of Inquiry of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to collect and preserve evidence of war crimes and human rights violations.”

It is also recommended that the government “support, together with various institutions and organizations of which Portugal is a part, the joint efforts of the United Nations and the ICC to establish a special criminal court to investigate and convict those responsible for war crimes following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.”

Parliament also approved the final text of the draft PAN resolution, which recommends that the government “condemn the ecocide and environmental destruction that Russia is inflicting on Ukraine” and “support the establishment of an independent international platform to assess the environmental damage caused by the Russian invasion.” Ukraine and study the necessary mitigation, repair and restoration measures.”

The manager is also encouraged to “support and actively participate in all initiatives aimed at mobilizing funds and technologies for the rehabilitation of wastewater treatment plants in Ukraine.”

This initiative received positive votes from PS, PSD, Chega, Iniciativa Liberal, PAN, and Livre, a no vote from PCP, and an abstention from BE.
