Former Socialist leader Francisco Assis this Friday expressed opposition to a demonstration called by Chega on Saturday in front of the PS headquarters in Lisbon, accusing the party of institutional vandalism and resorting to Mussolini language.
In the Assembly of the Republic on Thursday, Chegi President Andre Ventura said the goal is to “besiege PS headquarters to express outrage at the way they run the country.”
In a note sent to the Lusa agency, Francisco Assis believes that Chega’s demonstration on Saturday at Largo do Rato in Lisbon “must earn the fierce and open rejection of all Portuguese democrats” and warns that they may violate democratic -constitutional values.
“We are faced with an act that offends the basic principles of a democratic society, offends all political party activists and includes an implicit call for violent behavior. Verbal, which should attract the attention of the owners of sovereign bodies,” warns the former socialist leader.
Francisco Assis, current president of the Economic and Social Council (CES) and former leader of the socialist parliament, cites talk of closing the party’s headquarters “already beyond anything that is acceptable in a free and pluralistic society.”
“Chega chose the path of institutional vandalism and anti-democratic rhetoric, without ignoring the tragic consequences that could follow. We face such inappropriate and dangerous behavior that we cannot count on the indulgence of our silence,” adds Francisco Assis.
